Sanibel Sunset

On a recent visit to Florida we were treated to a most spectacular sunset. The scene on the horizon was simple—just a few palm trees, and a flotilla of white pelicans flying home to roost for the night. But the sky was magnificent, and we all gazed until darkness fell.

You will capture this instant in my design, Sanibel Sunset. The foreground objects are worked in bas-relief stitches, all in black, in a variety of threads and stitches, but the sky displays the gorgeous hues of a west Florida sunset—oranges, crimsons, flaming magentas and velvety violets. And the tranquil Gulf reflect the fleeting sun.

This design addresses perspective with emphasis with on stitch choice, thread texture, and the sheen of the fibers. The design is worked in Soie d’Alger, Petite Silk Lame, Kreinik metallics, & Threadworx overdyed floss. This small piece will also address subtle shading techniques.
